Budds Creek, MD
Coming into the event in the #2 points position & fresh off a PXM win at the King of the Crown less than two weeks prior, Grothus Dragbikes had high aspirations when pulling through the gate early Friday morning. After a quick setup from the “Assault Vehicle,” GDB pushed up to the lanes at the spotless Maryland International Raceway for qualifying session number one. Brunson was the last pair of the session alongside points leader Rodney Williford of Williford Racing. Both Brunson & Rodney clicked off a pair of side by side 4.11s for the number 8 & 9 respective qualifying positions after session one. After reviewing the run download & making a few adjustments, Brunson improved to a 4.075 to move up to the #4 qualifying position & low elapsed time of qualifying session two.
With the sun going down & the 19 PXMs on the property vying for a spot in the coveted 16 bike field, Brunson & Ed tried to deliver Bradley a 24th birthday present. Ed Honcho left hard with a 1.006 60 foot, kept the wheel packed & chugged down MIR to a 4.029 for the number two qualifying position just behind multi time World Champion & first ever PXM into the 3s, Ashley Owens. With Brunson locking up the number two qualifying position that made it three straight PDRA events in a row qualifying in the number two position with the baddest PXMs on the planet.
After a short lived Friday night birthday celebration for Bradley & a great Saturday morning church service put on by Tommy D’Aprile of Godspeed Ministries, GDB went into race mode. Brunson was paired up with another new member 4.0 member George Whitaker for the second PDRA first round matchup in a row. George didn’t have lane choice as the number 15 qualifier but he did leave the starting line with an advantage but that’s where it ended as Ed Honcho started flexing his muscle with a 1.001 sixty foot that lead to a super smooth 4.045 elapsed time at 174 mph for the win in the much improved MIR air from the previous day.
Down to the quarters Brunson drew another familiar face & local Maryland fan favorite, Ronnie “Pro Mod” Smith. Brunson & Ronnie had just butted heads in the semis at the PDRA opener with Brunson turning on the win light. For the second time in a row, Ronnie aboard the Shane Smith tuned machine rocket’ed to a second consecutive 4.002 against Brunson aboard the GDB Indocil Art backed Machine with the win light going to Ronnie.
GDB would like to congratulate Ronnie Smith, Shane Smith & the rest of their crew for setting the National Elapsed Time Record in the final round with an eye popping 3.973! Also congrats to team
McKinney/Owen’s for their event win & putting themselves right into the thick of things heading into the summer months on the PDRA season.
GDB made the 900 mile trip back to the Midwest & home based Davenport, IA where they are already making a few changes to Ed Honcho in preparation for stop number three on the PDRA tour, the Summer Drags at US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, MI June 1-2. This is considered GDB’s “home race” located just 315 miles from Davenport. GDB welcomes all marketing partners & supporters to come out & watch GDB & Brunson race at one of their favorite tracks in the country. Special thanks to Indocil Art, Sentry Industries, Klemme Performance Motorcycle, Robinson Industries, Schnitz Electronics, Trick Tools, & Roemer Machine for being part of the ride!
