After back to back PDRA quarter final losses from the number two and three qualifying positions, Grothus Dragbikes headed into the last race of the first half of the season with high hopes of going rounds & collecting valuable championship points. GDB rolled through the gates Friday morning & quickly setup for round one of qualifying. With ten bikes on the property, GDB knew getting off to a good start could be crucial in securing a spot in the always tough 8 bike PDRA field.
Q1 Brunson squared off with current points leader Ronnie Smith & Brunson led from start to finish stopping the clocks with a solid 4.115 to put him in the number two position. After leaking the bike down & not being happy with the results of the #4 cylinder, GDB went to work on pulling “Slim” & putting in “King Kong” before Q2. GDB had an extra set of hands on deck as intern Cameron Young of Indocil Art was there to take it all in & be called upon when needed. “This isn’t what I had planned for when I got here, but I’m already learning a lot.”
Q2 didn’t see much improvement from the top half of the field other than Ronnie Smith bumping Brunson to #3 with his 4.09 but King Kong was happy to be back in the frame rails of Ed Honcho & flexed his muscle with a solid 660 feet wheel toting 4.12 at 174 mph. After getting solid data from Q2 & track temps going down as the sun did, GDB knew they could improve in Q3.
Right out of the box, unqualified Ehren Litten aboard the Litten/Williford Racing PXM turbo (with several GDB parts including wheels, front end, & front fairing) blasted to a 4.03 at 180+ mph for the number two qualifying spot. Brunson & Chris Garner Jones of Huntsville, AL were the second to last pair & laid down side by side 4.055s with Brunson getting the qualifying position nod in the number four spot via mph. The next & final pair saw Terry Schweigert (backed with DTM power) go to the number one spot with a 4.02 & Ronnie Smith (backed with Shane Smith power) go to the number three spot with a 4.04.
Saturday morning brought another day of hot temps & tough matchups from top to bottom. Brunson & the GDB crew were set to square off with the ever familiar Chris Garner Jones of the TT Jones Racing team from Huntsville, AL tuned by William Garner. Having two very similar performing machines over the weekend, both riders knew getting a starting line advantage would probably be crucial in turning on the win light. Both riders stuffed their nitrous huffing PXMs into the beams & when the light turned green it was Chris getting the advantage with a stout VMP .028 to Brunson’s off pace .058. Brunson began making up ground by the 60 foot clock with a 1.01 to Chris’ 1.03 but was only able to make up .01 total with a losing 4.07 to Chris’ 4.08.
Another solid outing by the Davenport, Iowa PXM team qualifying in the top half of the field but another very disappointing quarter final elimination. They will look to make improvements over the next couple of weeks before it’s time to take their show on the road to the third stop at the Manufacturer's Cup tour in West Salem, OH July 13-15.
They plan to be busy with three GDB riders Shane “Showboat” Eperjesi, Jean Gosselin of Romouski, Canada & Brody “Peanut” Grothus competing with entires in Pro Modified, Pro Open, Ultra 4.60 (sponsored by Grothus Dragbikes) & Super Comp. In addition to racing nearly a third of the classes at Man Cup, GDB owner & lead fabricator, Ed Grothus along with head of Sales & Marketing, Bradley Grothus will be on Manufacturers midway answering questions & while displaying GDB jewelry including but not limited to GDB legacy wheels, front ends, grip sets, brake rotors, brake hangers, fire suppression systems, & much more!
